MEMORY STANDARDS CONSORTIUM Jedec has announced a low voltage DDR3 standard that will cut power usage significantly.

The DDR3L standard sets a requirement of 1.35V for memory devices that adhere to the standard. Standard DDR3 voltage is set at 1.5V, with Jedec claiming that the reduction will result in a 15 per cent drop is power usage. Compared to DDR2, the drop is an impressive 40 per cent.

While DDR3 is commonly used in consumer systems, Jedec is pitching the positive effects of DDR3L towards servers. "This significant reduction in power consumption, especially in memory-intensive systems, will have dramatic benefits in areas such as power supply demand, system cooling requirements and potential packaging density."

Jedec is claiming that production of 1.35V DDR3L will ramp up quickly, with a number of major DRAM manufacturers pledging support. A spokesman for Samsung said it "Anticipates rapid adoption of this standard in the marketplace, which will add considerably to the movement for greener components, something we’ve been aggressively supporting for our power-conscious customers."

With being green so fashionable, there's no doubt DDR3L's lower power consumption will prove to be not only useful but popular.
